Nigerian athletes set for Akure Golden League

ATHLETES from all parts of Nigeria are set to clash at the third leg of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Golden League scheduled to hold this weekend at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State.
Technical officer of AFN, Yusuf Alli, in an interview expects improved performances from the athletes from the previous outings in Abuja and Ilorin respectively.
The two-time Olympian said that logistics are in place to make the event a memorable one just as the national record holder in the men’s long jump noted that the athletes are in high spirits for the Golden League.
It will be recalled that junior athletes took over the podium at the second leg of the event in Ilorin as the likes of Divine Odududru, Ese Brume, and Akerele Omeza won their respective events.
Oduduru won the 200m ahead of Odele Tega and Briggs Tamunotonye respectively.
Brume also impressed in the long jump as she beat her senior counterpart, Chinazom Amadi to second place with a leap of 6.40m.
However the battle for the N2million prize money will go a notch higher, following the absence of some of the elite athletes who are currently in the United States ahead of the IAAF World Relays slated to hold in Bahamas later this month.
The fourth leg of the Golden League is slated to hold in Kaduna on May 24.
