De Bruyne could play against Arsenal, says Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, refused to rule Kevin De Bruyne out of Sunday's clash with Arsenal, saying he could yet be involved despite picking up an injury on Wednesday night, reports BBC Sport.

"He feels a little better today... Tomorrow we train and we will see. He could be [involved]," Guardiola told a news conference on Friday.

De Bruyne was substituted at half-time during the 0-0 draw against Inter Milan. The Belgium international picked up an injury late in the first half after trying to race onto a through ball from Jack Grealish.

City prepare to host Arsenal in what could prove a pivotal clash in the race for the Premier League title.

Guardiola's side have been unbeaten this season and are top of the Premier League after winning all of their opening four games.

The Spaniard was asked about the ongoing debate over the congested football calendar, particularly Rodri's comments that a player strike may not be far off.

"I agree with you, maybe for the first time, that many voices are talking about the players," Guardiola said. "I'm pretty sure that if something is going to change, it must come from the players. They are the only ones who can change something.

"The business can be without managers, sporting directors, media and owners, but without players you cannot play. The only ones to have the power to do it is them.

"And also I'm pretty busy they've done it to adjust the game, to make it more attractive. That's the reason why many players around the world, not just Rodders [Rodri], are starting to talk. We'll see."

Kane set for another Bundesliga record

Bayern Munich striker, Harry Kane, could become the top scoring English player in Bundesliga history this weekend - just weeks into his second season in Germany, reports BBC Sport.

The England captain scored four against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night in the Champions League, but needs one at Werder Bremen today to break his latest record.

The 31-year-old has scored 40 Bundesliga goals in 35 games, level with the record of Jadon Sancho - who took 118 matches to reach the total across two spells at Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho only broke the record last season, which had been Tony Woodcock's 39 goals in 131 games for Cologne in the 1980s.

Kane, who has scored seven goals in his past two games, and Bayern go to Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Bayern have won all their games under Vincent Kompany so far.

Kane has scored 53 goals in 50 games for Bayern - compared to the 26 Robert Lewandowski managed in his first 50, and the 49 Erling Haaland hit in his first 50 games for Dortmund.

"He's already got five Bundesliga hat-tricks," said Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard.

"It's absolutely extraordinary, and he's had the best ever debut season in terms of goalscoring in Bundesliga history.

"The Bayern fans love him and if he stays I think he's going to break all kinds of records in the German league."

BBC pundit Stephen Warnock said: "He will score goals at Bayern Munich as he suits the way they play. The one thing about Vincent Kompany's teams is they do create so many opportunities,"

"He will be involved in 50 goals this season with goals and assists, but he will still get questioned about his England position.

"I don't know why people want to question him, he is still phenomenal."

His four goals in the 9-2 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night led to the Croatian team parting company with manager Sergej Jakirovic.

Another Englishman hoping to move up the Bundesliga scoring charts is Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens - who has six across three seasons.

The 20-year-old has scored four goals in all competitions this season, including two in midweek at Club Bruges.

Ahead Sept. 21 showdown: I won't give Dubois an inch, says Joshua

Two-time former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, wants to ensure Daniel Dubois didn't 'take an inch' in their confrontation at a face-off this weekend in front of a British post-war record of 96,000 crowd at the Wembley Stadium.

Joshua, 34, challenges Dubois for the IBF heavyweight title, but have already sparked a rivalry between each other in a spikey fight build-up.

The British power-hitters were separated by security at a face-off before their launch press conference, as Joshua stood up after his rival wanted to get into it before the opening bell.

And AJ has now revealed in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT pundit Spencer Oliver why he really decided to escalate their tense exchange.

"Look I tell anyone at home, don't let anyone take in an inch because that then becomes a mile," Joshua said.

"That can then have a ripple effect because other people start thinking,

'Oh I can push his buttons as well.'

"You have to sometimes draw a line under certain things and put a full stop behind it.

"That can eradicate people doing it. I'm in a very competitive industry and you have to make your mark known that you aren't here to play games.

"That's all it is. I'm not someone to tolerate any nonsense and I'd advised everyone to have that same attitude."

Footage emerged of the incident which saw Dubois call for Joshua to 'go now' as he showed a new fiery side to his personality.

Joshua stood up and edged towards his rival, before threatening to 'smash a chair' across his face, as things quickly turned prickly.

Luckily the altercation did not come to blows with the pair prevented from throwing punches before fight night.

But there will be concerns from security officials that things could again be stirred during the final media duties before the clash.

Dubois' promoter Frank Warren has confirmed exactly that, insisting that both teams are on edge at the thought of things becoming hostile.

"Fight week, everybody is on edge. These guys are jumping out of their skin and as fit as they're ever going to be," Warren said.

"They know what's at stake. It's pretty much a mental game now. Each of them will be trying to get an edge mentally.

"I'm sure something will be said, because that's the nature of the business.

"Whatever is said, at the end of the day it doesn't matter. What does matter is Saturday night when they step into the ring.

"When the first bell goes is when you get down to the serious business.

When you're getting hit."

Joshua, Daniel Dubois set to settle British rivalry Sept. 21

When Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno contested the World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight title at the Cardiff Arms Park in 1993, they also settled one of the bitterest rivalries the British fight scene has known, reports www.talksport.com.

Bruno, challenging for a world heavyweight title for the third time, was not only Britain’s most popular fighter, but most popular active athlete.

Lewis, owing largely to his Canadian accent and an awareness of the fact that he had represented Canada at the Olympics but was being marketed, like Bruno, as a fighter from London, was still being treated by the British public with suspicion, and in some cases contempt.

Lewis, making the second defence of his title, remained under pressure to fight Riddick Bowe in what remains one of the most appealing heavyweight match-ups that never came to fruition.

He also remained proud of his Jamaican roots and had been known to walk to the ring to the strains of Bob Marley, but was cynically told by Bruno: “I’m going to hit you upside your head so hard you won’t even know if you’re Canadian, Jamaican, Los Angeles, or what. [You’re] not British.”

The champion, said to consider Bruno a sell-out who had betrayed his West Indian heritage, described Bruno, even more cuttingly, as an “Uncle Tom”.

Speaking months after the murder of Stephen Lawrence that had done so much to heighten the racial tension that already existed in Britain, the build-up to their fight had immediately become toxic, and quickly extended beyond both fighters to also include their teams.

Bruno was a committed supporter of the divisive Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher at a time when Lewis’ loyalties were with Labour.

The challenger also had the words “True Brit” on some of his clothing and regularly wore the colours red, white and blue.

It is claimed that he considered Lewis an opportunist who had returned to Britain in the belief that doing so would increase his chances of success.

He was also under a wider pressure to win because of the perception that after defeats by Tim Witherspoon and Mike Tyson a world heavyweight title fight would never come his way again.

Bruno, his trainer George Francis and his then-manager Mickey Duff had wanted to fight indoors at Wembley Arena. Lewis’ promoter Panos Eliades, supported by his outspoken manager Frank Maloney, instead chose to stage the fight in Cardiff at the risk of heavy rain.

“[In Cardiff the fight will be] lost in obscurity,” Duff said. “They know London fans would go ga-ga over Frank. Frank Bruno is really the hometown fighter. That’s why they didn’t want it in London.”

It was reported that even the WBC had recognised the risk of the British weather, and approved a clause being written into the fight’s contract that it would be settled on the scorecards in the event of a heavy downpour after four rounds.

The undercard, featuring the great Joe Calzaghe stopping Paul Hanlon on the occasion of his professional debut, started on September 30, but by the time Bruno and Lewis made their way to the ring it was October 1.

The rain that had fallen during the undercard led to the ring canvas being replaced, and when the covers came off of the new one ahead of the main event it was 12.32am.

A crowd of 25,784 was present to watch Lewis-Bruno, but three weeks before then only 11,000 tickets had been sold – leaving Eliades and Maloney then 4,000 short of the number they needed to sell to break even on an evening when Bruno was paid more than £1million and Lewis a total of £3million.

When Bruno entered the ring that night with plastic bags over his boots it was 12.54am. Lewis, according to Maloney asleep 20 minutes earlier, joined him four minutes later.

There was little question that Lewis was rightly recognised as the more polished of the two fighters, and yet it was Bruno, given a hero’s welcome by the crowd in Wales, who built an early lead.

He hurt Lewis in the second round, forcing the champion – fighting for the knockout for perhaps the only time in his career; years later he said he 'just wanted to take [Bruno’s] head off' – to prioritise his famed jab.

Lewis was cut over his left eye as he continued to struggle – Francis later said “I kept telling [Bruno] to concentrate; to concentrate” – as Bruno’s sense of momentum built.

If it had rained any harder, he may have been awarded victory via the scorecards – he was leading 59-55, 57-57, 57-57 – but in the seventh round the direction of the fight swiftly and dramatically changed.

The champion landed a powerful-and-wild left hook, contributing to Bruno sagging and becoming almost defenceless.

The ruthless streak that defined Lewis at his peak then detected his opportunity, and he threw an extended assault around the hurt Bruno’s face and neck until, after 72 seconds of the seventh, the referee Mickey Vann’s intervention came.

In the ring, post-fight, Maloney was spat at by Bruno’s wife Laura. “There was too much pride up there, and both boys forgot their boxing,” he said afterwards. “That was a real war up there. That was savage.”

“I’m a better fighter than I have ever been given credit for,” said Bruno. He regardless would win the same title two years later, on the most memorable night of his career against Oliver McCall.

AFC Champions League: Ronaldo ruled out of Al-Shorta clash

Cristiano Ronaldo sent his best wishes to Al-Nassr team-mates as he misses out on the club's AFC Champions League opener on Monday.

The 39-year-old talisman has been ruled out of the AFC Champions League clash against Iraq's Al-Shorta on Monday after being diagnosed with a viral infection.

Ronaldo was advised to rest in Riyadh and as a result, he did not travel with the Al-Nassr squad to Baghdad.

Ahead of the Saudi club's AFC Champions League opener on Monday, the Portuguese icon sent his best wishes to his team-mates and also shared a message for his fans in Iraq who were eager to catch a

glimpse of their idol.

Taking to Instagram, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star uploaded a team photo on his story and wrote, "Wishing my teammates the best of luck for the game and special message to all my

fans in Iraq. Hope to see you all soon."

The veteran forward will hope to recover before the club's next Saudi Pro League game which is against Al-Ettifaq on Friday night.

Osaka splits from coach Fissette

Former world number one Naomi Osaka has parted ways with coach Wim Fissette.

It comes after she admitted to being frustrated with recent results following an early exit from the US Open last month.

The Japanese tennis star began working with the Belgian in 2020 and has had two stints with him.

Osaka, 26, won two of her four Grand Slams - the 2020 US Open and 2021 Australian Open titles - with Fissette in her corner.

"Four years, two Slams and a whole lot of memories. Thanks Wim for being a great coach and an even greater person. Wishing you all the best," Osaka wrote on Instagram.

Fissette rejoined Osaka when she returned to tennis in January following the birth of her daughter in July 2023.

However, Osaka has reached the quarter-finals in only two of the 16 tournaments she has played following her 15 months away, and has not gone past the second round of a Grand Slam.

"It's been a little difficult because obviously I can only gauge how I'm doing by results," she said after exiting the US Open last month.

"I feel faster. I feel better, but I lost in the second round. So it's a little rough.

"I feel like I'm working way harder than I've ever worked in my life, so it needs to turn into something."

Bellingham not fit for Real Sociedad game, says Ancelotti

Manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Jude Bellingham is not fit to play for Real Madrid in their LaLiga game at Real Sociedad on Saturday, while midfield teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni will also miss out.

Bellingham suffered a muscular injury in his right leg last month, with sources telling ESPN he would be absent until after this week's international break.

The England star didn't train with his teammates at Real Madrid City on Friday morning, and neither did Tchouameni, although two more injury doubts, defenders Éder Militão and Ferland Mendy, were both present.

"Tomorrow [Saturday] they won't play," Ancelotti said, when asked about Bellingham and Tchouaméni in his pre-match news conference. "It's too early. We'll see if they'll be available on Tuesday in the Champions League [against VfB Stuttgart]."

Champions Madrid have drawn two of their opening four LaLiga games so far this season, to leave them four points behind rivals Barcelona already.

The team's reshaped forward line -- which now includes summer arrival Kylian Mbappé -- has not been at its best, with Ballon d'Or contender Vinícius Júnior scoring just once, from the penalty spot, in those four matches.

"He's not at his best, but he's decisive for us," Ancelotti said, when asked about Vinícius. "We're not in a hurry. The team has scored goals and he's been important... I'm very happy with what he's doing."

Ancelotti denied that Vinícius has been distracted by interest from Saudi Arabia, with ESPN reporting last month that the Brazil international had put off a decision on his future until next summer.

"I don't know if [Vinícius] had an offer or not," Ancelotti said. "I speak with everyone on a daily basis, and we've never talked about that subject. Vinicius loves playing football so much that anything on the outside doesn't bother him."

Teammate Rodrygo admitted this week that he was "upset" at being left off the men's 2024 Ballon d'Or shortlist, and said his versatility had affected his development, but Ancelotti said he had no concerns about locker room jealousy.

"If it happens, I'll detect it," Ancelotti said. "In the locker room there's a very good, healthy atmosphere... [Rodrygo] deserved to be [on the shortlist] and I understand that he's upset.

"Someone has forgotten what he's done in the Champions League, scoring against [Manchester] City and being important. It's a virtue that he's a wildcard, that he can play in many positions and always does well."

On Friday, Real Madrid reached an official agreement with goalkeeper Andriy Lunin over a new contract which will run until 2028.

Arsenal wanted Sterling within 10 secs, says Arteta

Manager Mikel Arteta has said he knew within 10 seconds of speaking to Raheem Sterling that he was the right signing for Arsenal and warned that the winger has a point to prove as he looks to revitalise his career.

Arsenal travel to Tottenham for Sunday's north London derby with uncertainty over their starting lineup after captain Martin Ødegaard and Riccardo Calafiori both picked up injuries during the international break.

Sources told ESPN that the pair are likely to miss tomorrow's game but Arteta refused to rule both players out as Ødegaard undergoes further examinations on an ankle problem and Calafiori battles a calf injury.

While Declan Rice is also suspended, one player whose availability is unquestioned is Sterling, who joined Arsenal on a season-long loan deadline day from Chelsea in a move which only surfaced in the final few hours of the window.

Sterling was omitted from interim boss Lee Carsley's England squad and has therefore had almost two weeks acclimatising to his new surroundings at Arsenal's London Colney training base.

"He [Sterling] looks great. He's got a lot of energy, a smile on his face and he's at it. He wants to prove a point and when someone's got that in his belly you sense it straight away," Arteta said at a news conference on Friday.

"Obviously I don't need to know anything else about his quality and what he can bring to the team.

"In his personal life a lot of things have changed but with the player I was really surprised. The first call I had with him I knew in the first ten seconds we have to bring him because he really wanted it.

"That was my only question mark: 'what stage is he at in his career?' [But] after 10 seconds, I knew already before the next questions that we needed him here.

"What I see is hunger. He's a player that wants to play every minute of every game. When that's not the case, he's not happy. He wants to play every single day and I see that.

"His commitment and the level of energy that he's bringing to the team is a big boost. You can feel it walking through the door. We are better with him. He's going to make us better."

Arteta signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract on Thursday which ties him to

the Gunners until 2027.

Asked if there was another job he would have left for, Arteta said: "No, the emotional attachment that I have, that my family and kids have, the experience that I have with the people is too strong.

"We are in the right direction and we have made some huge steps. We have a lot still to make and I sense that hunger from the ownership to the board to all the players and all the staff here. This is the aim and the objective."

Jackson extends Chelsea stay until 2033

Chelsea striker, Nicolas Jackson, has penned a two-year contract extension that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033, the Premier League side announced on Friday.

The 23-year-old joined Chelsea from Villarreal in June 2023 on an eight-year deal and went on to score 17 goals in all competitions last season. He has begun this campaign with two goals in four appearances.

"I am feeling very good and am very happy to sign a new contract and stay at the club," Jackson said in a statement.

"It feels great the club has confidence in me. I am working very hard. I am very happy to extend my contract and stay here for many years."

The extension sees Chelsea continue the trend of offering their young players lengthy contracts. Last month, Cole Palmer signed a two-year extension to keep him at the club until 2033.

In a summer that's seen 11 new arrivals at the club, Jackson has emerged as a mainstay under new manager Enzo Maresca and has started each of their three Premier League games this season.

"Very happy, first of all because he is doing very well," Maresca said at a news conference on Friday when asked about Jackson's contract extension.

"He is working well on and off the ball. He is the kind of player that is always going to score goals. With us in the first three Premier League games, he has scored goals. Very happy with Nico."

Change appears to be brewing off the field too at Stamford Bridge, with a report in Bloomberg claiming that Chelsea's majority shareholders are involved in a power struggle and are exploring options to buy each other out.

Maresca however, opted to sidestep questions about the ownership row and said his players aren't distracted by it.

"The players are professional enough to understand there are things we cannot control. The main focus, for me, is exactly the main focus of the players; to improve things. This is the main target for them, for me, for all of us," he said.

Wilder not ready to retire, says trainer

Former World Boxing Council (WBC) world heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, is set to ignore pleas to retire and still has his eyes on huge-name fights.

Wilder has suffered a huge decline in the past year, losing to Joseph Parker in December, before being stopped by Zhilei Zhang in devastating fashion in June.

The defeats were met with widespread calls for the 'Bronze Bomber' to call time on his stellar career, given he now faces a long way back to reach the world title mix.

But Malik Scott, Wilder's trainer, believes he still has a bright future in the sport despite the doubts.

"Zhang is a very big, dangerous southpaw. Deontay got caught with a shot that put him in an unbalanced position, and Zhang did his job," Scott told Genting Casino.

"Deontay has the heart of a lion and is willing to go out on his shield in the ring.

He'll be back. Deontay will fight again.

"He still has a bright future in boxing, especially at the high level. Losses happen in boxing, even to the greatest fighters.

"Right now, he’s doing very well; recovering, enjoying life, and heavily involved in real estate and investing.

"He just had a great vacation with his kids. Life is good for him. The same type of people who want Deontay to retire told Muhammad Ali not to fight George Foreman.

"They said George Foreman shouldn’t have fought Michael Moorer. These naysayers are part of the sport, and we need them.

"They provide the energy that keeps the fighters motivated and pushes managers and promoters. In my opinion, they’re wrong eight out of ten times, but it’s all part of the game."

Some huge name fights had been on the table prior to his defeats including finally settling his rivalry with Anthony Joshua.

The pair were on course to meet this year when his defeat to Parker derailed the signed agreement, and then it was dead and buried when he lost to Zhang.

Wilder had also held talks with former UFC champion Ngannou, who stepped in the ring twice in defeats to Tyson Fury and in March Joshua.

And Scott believes these are fights that can still be revived despite his bleak form in the squared circle.

Joshua will KO Fury in six rounds, says Chisora

Derek Chisora has boldly predicted that Anthony Joshua will knock out both Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk - if he fights the Ukrainian again.

Heavyweight veteran Chisora is approaching the end of his own career in which he's shared the ring with almost every top heavyweight around.

The 40-year-old now has 48 fights under his belt and intends to make it a round 50 before quitting boxing next year.

In his career, he's taken on both Fury and Usyk, and also sparred with AJ on many occasions as they originated from the same amateur gym - Finchley ABC.

He is good friends with all three, but has the closest bond with Joshua and has now seen enough to believe his old pal can surge to end his career in magnificent fashion.

The 34-year-old is already a two-time unified heavyweight world champion, but lost his belts in defeats to Andy Ruiz and Oleksandr Usyk.

While he avenged the loss to the Mexican-American, Joshua was unable to overcome the Ukrainian and succumbed to defeat against him twice.

Now though, he's rebuilt with four straight wins and looked particularly impressive in his last two performances under new trainer in Ben Davison.

On this evidence, Chisora has predicted that Joshua can stop both Fury and Usyk to reign as undisputed heavyweight king in 2025.

"AJ will knock Fury out in six rounds and he will stop Usyk in round four. I'm telling you now," Chisora said on talkSPORT talkBOXING.

"Because now he's got the right dancing partner, his trainer.

"That guy hasn't stopped watching the two tapes of him fighting Usyk.

"Because he wants that fight badly, he wants the rematch. He wants Usyk to win the fight with Fury."

Asked if AJ will become undisputed, Chisora replied "Yes...

"I think the changes he's made are Ben Davison and the people around him round him now.

Derek Chisora confirms to Simon Jordan and Spencer Oliver when he will retire from boxing

"They're listening to him, they're understanding. They've gelled now.

"He was not knocking out his sparring partners and now he's knocking them out.

Because of Ben Davison."

First, Joshua must beat Daniel Dubois on September 21 - with Dubois' IBF heavyweight world title at stake.

If he picks up this belt and becomes a three-time heavyweight world champion, then the path will open up to undisputed in 2025.

Chisora concluded: "The fight with Dubois, everybody thinks it's gonna be a walk in the park, but I don't think so.

"Because Daniel's changed and AJ knows that. It's gonna be a good fight.

"I don't see it as a one-sided fight, no I don't.

"I think it ends in six. [AJ] has to stop him [inside six] because Daniel's easy to hit."

Ronaldo could have worth £1bn in his prime, says Michael Owen

Michael Owen believes Cristiano Ronaldo could have worth £1 billion in his prime for the sporting and commercial success he delivered at Real Madrid, reports goal.com.

In the summer of 2009, Ronaldo set sail for Madrid after Los Blancos shelled out a then world-record £80m for the forward. The rest is history, with the Portuguese netting 450 goals in 438 appearances and winning 15 trophies, including two La Liga titles, four Champions League triumphs and two Copa del Rey crowns.

With time and a consistently inflating market, transfer fees have hit the ceiling.

There have been quite a few £100m transfers in the past decade with Neymar's move to Paris Saint-Germain for £200m currently being the most expensive deal of all time.

Owen believes Ronaldo would have shattered all records if he forked out a transfer in current market conditions and even "£500 million" would have been cheap for the talismanic forward.

In an interview with Genting Casino, Owen said: "If you look at the transfer record now of over £200 million, you’d have to say that Cristiano Ronaldo was worth more than that at Manchester United. In hindsight, for what he gives you, look at the amount of Champions League medals he's going to pretty much win you single-handedly, for the amount of shirts and the publicity and the merchandise around the world that he's going to sell.

"In hindsight, I think 500 million would be cheap. You could even double that if you look at the goals, the trophies, the shirts, and how much the clubs have benefited from having him there. How he's grown their brand, how he's won them trophies and made them all this money. So I guess if you'd said to them at that point how much he would give you for nine seasons, they might say yes to a billion pounds, forget about £80 million. £500 million would be cheap."

Real Madrid splashed the cash for Jude Bellingham last summer and further reinforced their squad in 2024 by signing Kylian Mbappe after his deal expired with Paris Saint-Germain. Despite these mega signings they are in a robust financial situation and Owen believes that much of the credit goes to Ronaldo.

"Since he (Ronaldo) played for Real Madrid they’ve thrown hundreds and hundreds of millions on the new stadium, they are in a great financial position," he said. "They're paying all this money to Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham - a lot of this will have been off the back of the success of Cristiano Ronaldo."

I saw Ngannou as a juggernaut, says Joshua

Former WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, was able to do to Francis Ngannou, what many felt Tyson Fury should have done when they squared off in the ring.

The Cameroonian cage fighter caused Fury all kinds of problems last October despite the sizeable odds stacked against him, reports talksport.com.

Ngannou was making his professional boxing debut and had been given little-to-no chance against the then-WBC heavyweight champion of the world.

However, the novice boxer sent Fury tumbling to the canvas in the third round and pushed him all the way to the final bell.

It was a completely different story when he was matched up against Joshua five months later.

AJ looked in complete control throughout the fight and repeatedly found a home for his clubbing right hand.

Joshua found success in luring Ngannou in with hard and soft feints before timing his trademark shot over the top while the former UFC heavyweight champion advanced.

The result was a vicious yet dexterous knockout victory, which AJ credits to his focus over the past couple of years on improving his boxing IQ.

"I always look at the Ngannou fight, the guy was a juggernaut," he told DAZN.

"He was massive and I thought to myself if I only depended on strength it would have been a lot tougher fight.

"But due to the fact I went through a process where I tried to improve my IQ, I was able to dispatch of the goliath in quick fashion.

"I'm not saying he was an elite boxer but I took it on the on the premises of what he done with Tyson Fury."

Joshua's approach to fights has significantly shifted in recent years.

AJ has become a far more patient and cerebral fighter since his knockout loss to Andy Ruiz Jr in June 2019.

Before Joshua would often rely heavily on his strength, size and power, whereas now he tends to pick his shots more.

Canelo Alvarez was made to wait backstage during clash with UFC title fight Troy Deeney: I tried to ‘smash up’ John Terry, but he taught me instant lesson.

However, he appears to have found the perfect balance between aggression and patience under new trainer Ben Davison, who worked with him for his last two outings against Otto Wallin and Ngannou

Both were complete boxing performances and earned him significant praise.

Sterling underperformed at Chelsea, says Gallas

Raheem Sterling has no one but himself to blame for being frozen out at Chelsea because of his disappointing performances, says William Gallas, reports www.goal.com.

Sterling, alongside Ben Chilwell, found himself quickly left out of the Chelsea squad under new coach Enzo Maresca, who made clear that he wanted to get rid of the pair. The England winger then saw his shirt number handed to another player and ended up joining Arsenal on loan at the end of the summer transfer window as it became clear he would not get a chance at Stamford Bridge.

While Chelsea have been criticised for the way they treated the likes of Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah ahead of their summer moves, ex-Blues star Gallas feels Sterling should "blame" himself for his departure as he failed to perform in the two years since he joined from Manchester City.

"Sometimes players need to blame themselves when things don’t work out at their club. Raheem Sterling was in the situation that he was at Chelsea because he didn’t perform for two years," Gallas told Gambling Zone. "He didn’t score or create enough goals and the new manager would’ve watched him and made the decision that he doesn’t want him in his squad, that’s not the manager’s fault. Now everybody is interested to see how he does at Arsenal and sometimes players need to feel the love of their manager to get the best out of them. For me personally, I didn’t need to feel that from a manager. Even if the manager didn’t like me I had to make sure I was playing well enough that he couldn’t afford to put me on the bench."

After missing out on the first few weeks of the season, Sterling will hope to get his first taste of Premier League football in 2024-25 when Arsenal come up against Tottenham in a north London derby on September 15.

Ronaldo, a problem for Portugal, says Agbonlahor

Cristiano Ronaldo has become a “problem” for Portugal, says former England international Gabriel Agbonlahor, with the all-time great told “there’s a reason he’s in Saudi Arabia”.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner bid farewell to European football following his dramatic release by Manchester United in November 2022. After gracing the World Cup finals in Qatar, CR7 opted to spread his wings and head for the Middle East.

Ronaldo has remained a prolific presence for Al-Nassr – hitting 50 goals for them last season – but posted a blank on Euro 2024 duty with his country.

Rather than announce his international retirement at the end of that event, the 39-year-old has vowed to play on – making more history when reaching 900 career goals.

Agbonlahor, who faced Ronaldo in Premier League action during the Portuguese's first spell at Old Trafford, has told talkSPORT of why an iconic figure is doing his national team few favours: “If you watched him in the Euros, we forget don’t we, that he didn’t do anything. He probably hindered other players being played. I think him playing that many games probably cost Portugal.

“I know people will say that’s harsh and it’s not his fault, but you know, you had your time. You’ve still got what it takes, but have you got what it takes at the highest level any more? There’s a reason why he’s playing in Saudi Arabia, there’s a reason why he got let go at Manchester United, there’s a reason why he’s not playing in Europe. I just think Portugal have got so many exciting players that were left on the bench during that Euros.”

Agbonlahor went on to say of Ronaldo’s ongoing presence in the Portugal camp causing a selection headache for head coach Roberto Martinez: “Ronaldo will want to go to the World Cup, he’s not just carrying on to play the Nations League. The end goal is retiring at the World Cup. But if I’m [Roberto]

Martinez I’m like ‘ugh, it’s the Ronaldo show again’. He’s already said I don’t want to be a bench player. He said if he’s in the squad he wants to be a starter.

You’ve got that problem. It’s a hard one for the manager because is Ronaldo as big as Portugal?”

Ronaldo has offered no indication that he will be hanging up his boots any time soon, as he looks to reach 1,000 goals. The expectation is that he will play on to the 2026 World Cup finals, allowing him to add to historic international hauls of 213 caps and 131 goals.

Paris 2024: Storey wins 19th Paralympic gold

Britain's Sarah Storey won a record-extending 19th Paralympic gold medal as she beat French rider Heidi Gaugain in a thrilling sprint finish to the cycling road race.

It was a golden day for Britain's female cyclists as Sophie Unwin and guide Jenny Holl also won the women's B event, overtaking Ireland's Katie-George Dunlevy in the final stages, while Lora Fachie took bronze.

It is Unwin's second gold and fourth medal of these Games, while GB have now won 21 cycling medals in Paris, including eight golds.

Seven of those cycling medals have been won in road events - and all of them by women.

Storey, 46, was part of the leading pack throughout her 71km race before she and Gaugain - 27 years the Briton's junior - broke away in the final section.

Storey edged clear of Gaugain in the final corners, before crossing the line just inches ahead of her rival.

She punched the air after crossing the line before hugging her daughter Louisa, who was watching on the roadside with the rest of Storey's family.

“It’s really amazing," Storey said. "I’m just delighted my wheel was in front at the finish."

Pegula faces Sabalenka in US Open final

Home favourite Jessica Pegula staged a stunning comeback to set up an enticing US Open final against world number two Aryna Sabalenka.

American Pegula came back from a set, break and break point down to see off Karolina Muchova 1-6 6-4 6-2 and reach a first major singles final.

She will now face Sabalenka, who powered into the final for the second year in a row with a 6-3 7-6 (7-2) victory over American Emma Navarro 6-3 7-2.

The Belarusian is the first women's player since the great Serena Williams in 2019 to reach back-to-back singles finals at Flushing Meadows.

Sabalenka will be greeted by a wall of noisy support for New York-born Pegula on Saturday - but she already has experience in that area, having jokingly admonished the crowd for cheering for Navarro.

"Well now you're cheering for me, it's a bit too late," Sabalenka said as she began her post-match interview.

"It really means a lot and even though you guys were supporting her still I had goosebumps for you cheering."

Having previously promised to buy the crowd drinks if they cheered for her, Sabalenka joked: "Margaritas for everyone!"

Pegula had previously lost her past six major quarter-finals before beating world number one Iga Swiatek on Thursday, and she followed that up with a battling victory over Muchova.

"I came out flat but she was playing unbelievable, she made me look like a beginner," Pegula said.

"I was about to burst into tears because it was embarrassing, she was destroying me.

"I don't know how I turned that around, honestly."

'Why Osimhen's move to Chelsea failed'

The cause of Victor Osimhen's failed move to Premier League giants Chelsea on transfer deadline day in England a week ago has been revealed.

In a conversation arranged by former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick, Osimhen poured his heart out to Arise News, detailing how his transfer to Chelsea fell through.

Last December, the reigning African Player of the Year signed a new contract at Napoli with a release clause of 130 million euros valid for foreign clubs.

However, the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup winner claims his mental health was seriously affected at Napoli after the TikTok incident and there was no going back in his decision to depart the Diego Maradona Stadium, despite manager Antonio Conte pleading with him to stay, contrary to reports in the media.

Osimhen did not make an appearance for Napoli during pre-season preparations and was not considered for their Serie A games as his defiance led him to be frozen out of the team.

The Nigeria international suggested that Chelsea disrespected him by directly negotiating a swap deal with Napoli as far back as the start of August without informing him

Chelsea were ready to use Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku as a makeweight in their efforts to sign the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) silver medallist, but no agreement was reached.

Before the Blues came in on deadline day, Osimhen had already agreed personal terms with Al-Ahli but Napoli frustrated his move to the Saudi Pro League by making outrageous demands.

"He claims Chelsea completely disrespected him, negotiating a swap deal without his consent," Aaron Akerejola posted on Arise News YouTube channel.

"Thirty minutes after the deal with Al-Ahli was off, Chelsea finally reached out to Osimhen through co-owner, Hansjörg Wyss, offering him 130,000 pounds per week.

"Chelsea tried to arm-twist him with the claim he wanted £500,000-a-week.

"According to Mikel Obi who was helping engineer that particular deal, nothing like that was actually put out there."

Osimhen rejected the offer from Chelsea, claiming that 43 per cent of the wages goes to the British government, 20 percent to NHS and another £20,000 for image rights.

Osimhen completed a loan move to Turkish giants Galatasaray before reporting for international duty on Thursday, as Nigeria are set to host Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7 in a 2025 AFCON qualifier scheduled to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

FIBA U18: Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigers lose to Egypt in opener

Nigeria’s U18 men’s national team, the Junior D’Tigers, fell short in their opening FIBA U18 AfroBasket game against reigning champions Egypt at the University of Pretoria’s Rembrandt Hall, South Africa on Wednesday, reports www.afrosportnow.com.

The Nigerian youngsters, who faced some difficulties in obtaining visas to South Africa and only arrived the host nation hours to tipoff, suffered a 57-70 defeat to the Egyptians in their Group B battle.

Egypt’s Mohammed Hussin led all scorers with 21 points, while his teammate Omar Mowafak contributed 15. Meanwhile for Nigeria, Azeez Sulaimon led with 14 points.

“I had a good game. It was also a great win for my team. It sets us up well for the rest of the tournament,” said Mohammed Hussin.

The Junior D’Tigers, six-time winners of the competition, will face Angola in their next group game on Saturday, after the Angolans saw off Uganda in their opening game, while Egypt will battle with Uganda.

Ronaldo bags 900th career goal

Cristiano Ronaldo reached a significant milestone on Thursday night by scoring the 900th goal of his illustrious career.

The 39-year-old struck for Portugal in their Nations League game against Croatia, putting them 2-0 up as his side went on to win the game 2-1.

He became the first men's player in history to score 900 goals in official matches.

It prompted an emotional celebration by the forward, as he dropped to his knees by the corner flag in tears.

The goal was his 131st for his country, while he has also scored at club level for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and current club Al-Nassr.

"It was emotional because it's a milestone," Ronaldo said. "It seems like any other milestone but only I know, and the people around me, how hard it is to work every day, to be physically and psychologically fit, to score 900 goals.

"It's a unique milestone in my career."

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is 58 goals ahead of his nearest challenger, Lionel Messi, who is on 842. Brazilian legend Pelé is third on the list with 765.

Ronaldo was also the first to break the 800-goal barrier, doing so in late 2021 while in his second stint with Manchester United.

Such is Ronaldo's longevity that if someone was born when he scored the first competitive goal of his career they would now be 21.

He struck a double for Portugal's Sporting on 7 October 2002 at the age of 17 years, eight months and three days in a 3-0 win against Moreirense.

He then moved to Manchester United, scoring 118 goals in 293 games for the Red Devils before joining Real Madrid in 2009 for a then world record 94m euros (£80m).

In nine years at the Spanish giants, he scored 450 goals in just 438 games before making the move to Italy to join Juventus.

He added another 101 goals to his tally during his three years with the Italian club before returning to United, where he would score 27 goals in 54 games.

But a return to the Red Devils did not have a fairytale ending - and in 2023 he made the move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr, where he has got 68 goals and counting.

Incredibly, almost half of Ronaldo's goals (437) have been scored since he turned 30 in February 2015.

I copied Adesanya's celebration style, says Salah

Former UFC champion, Israel Adesanya, saluted Mohamed Salah after he used his celebration in a recent Premier League win, as the latter explained why he copied the Nigerian fighter's style of celebration.

Salah netted as the Reds ran riot at Old Trafford in their latest Premier League fixture against Man United this weekend, also laying on two assists during a 3-0 win.

After slotting a cool finish into the bottom corner to cap off the victory, Salah used an archer's gesture as he celebrated in front of the away fans.

In his post-match interview, the Egyptian talisman revealed he was inspired by the former UFC champion's celebration.

He told media: “I think I was watching the UFC – Alex Pereira against Israel Adesanya.

“When he [Adesanya] won the second fight against Pereira, he celebrated like that because Pereira beat him in the first one.

“I like the celebration, that’s why I do it. I am a UFC fan.

“And also back home, people take it as, our Egyptian pharaohs used to do it when they drew something in a temple or the pyramids or somewhere. It’s similar.”

We should see that celebration plenty more times this season, having scored three already in three games.

He has also grabbed three assists as the 32-year-old shows no signs of slowing down.

'The Last Stylebender' has since posted his response on social media, replying:

"Each one teach one."

It was a very cryptic response from Adesanya, who has become a superstar in the sporting world since his rise in the cage.

Adesanya adopted the celebration after his famous KO revenge win over Alex Pereira at UFC 287 in April 2023.

He made the gesture as if firing arrows at his rival, who was left motionless on the octagon floor after being knocked out cold by the shots in the second round.

It has since been a feature of Salah's game, with the 32-year-old having already bagged three goals in three appearances since the season began.

Meanwhile for the former UFC champion, he is on a different trajectory of form having been beaten by Dricus Du Plessis in his most recent fight at UFC 305 last month.

Sabalenka bags fourth US Open q-final ticket in a row

Aryna Sabalenka reached the US Open quarter-finals for the fourth year in a row with an assured victory over Elise Mertens, reports bbc.com.

Second seed Sabalenka, beaten by Coco Gauff in the New York final last year, saw off her former doubles partner Mertens 6-2, 6-4.

The Belarusian hit 41 winners and saved all eight of the break points that Belgium's Mertens created.

Sabalenka is the first woman to reach four consecutive women's singles quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 2016.

She has now made the quarter-finals or better in her past eight Grand Slam appearances.

Her last defeat before that stage came at the 2022 Australian Open, where she was beaten by Kaia Kanepi in the fourth round. She has not lost a match in

Melbourne since, winning the title in 2023 and defending it in January this year.

Sabalenka will face China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, who beat silver medallist Donna Vekic 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 6-2, in the last eight.

A match which lasted two hours 50 minutes ended at 2.15am local time on Monday, the latest finish to a women's US Open match.

Sabalenka beat Zheng in the Australian Open final this year.

Paula Badosa earlier breezed past Wang Yafan 6-1 6-2 to set up a quarter-final against Emma Navarro, who ended Gauff's title defence in a three-set win.

Ahead Joshua/ Dubois clash: Saudi boxing chief hopes to lower PPV prices

Saudi boxing chief HE Turki Alalshikh has told talkSPORT that he intends to 'fix' boxing's rising pay-per-view prices.

Boxing fans have been left disillusioned with how much it now costs to watch the sport's biggest fights, leading to a rise in illegal streaming.

According to some claims, 20 million people illegally streamed Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk's historic undisputed heavyweight clash in May, costing TV rights holders around £95 million in lost revenue.

Eighteen per cent of those watching illegally were from the UK, where the price was set at £25, while 25 per cent came from North America.

United States PPV prices have been ludicrously high for some time.

Fury vs Usyk was priced at $69.99 in the United States, where punters have come to expect $50-plus fees for blockbuster showdowns.

In an attempt to tackle illegal streaming and appease boxing fans around the world, HE Alalshikh has promised to drastically cut PPV prices for all Riyadh Season cards, starting with Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois on September 21.

"You mention the PPV, I think this is my next big fight and I want your advice also," he told talkSPORT's Jordan and White show on Monday morning.

"I dream of a PPV with a good price to make the fans happy and subscribe and get them to watch it legally.

"Usually when I see a high PPV, a lot of people go and watch the fight illegally and this is not healthy for boxing and the platform.

"What I will try to push is to have our Riyadh Season shows at less than £20 in England and less than $20 around the world...

"I would prefer to have one million fans subscribe and buy the PPV for £20 than less than 500,000 [for £40].

"The people go around it illegally because the price is high. In the future, this will not build boxing.

"If I give the fans good fights at a good price then I will increase the fanbase."

Joshua vs Dubois will be available for £19.95 in the UK, with prices elsewhere yet to be officially confirmed.
